Our ESG materiality assessment

In 2022, Kyndryl worked with an independent, third-party advisor to conduct a detailed materiality assessment.  The three-step process identified topics, engaged internal and external stakeholders, and prioritized the results in terms of their relative importance to Kyndryl and our stakeholders. We also conducted a review of industry and peer best practices along with emerging trends to help align priority topics to our strategy. The results of our assessment highlighted various priorities in each of our three strategic domains that are disclosed in this report as follows:

  • Environment: Climate resilience and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, water, waste, supply chain management, including resilience, environmental impacts and supplier diversity.

  • People: Talent management including attraction and retention, inclusion, diversity and equity (ID&E), employee health and wellness, health and safety, social impact, human rights.

  • Trust: Cybersecurity, data privacy and responsible data use, business ethics, anti-corruption and anti-bribery.

*Materiality, as used here is distinct from, and should not be confused with, such terms as defined for SEC and other financial reporting purposes. Materiality assessments refer to the process by which companies identify and prioritize the urgency of various sustainability topics to their company.  The inclusion of information or the absence of information in this report should not be construed to represent the Company's belief regarding the materiality of the information for SEC or other financial reporting purposes.

Kyndryl's ESG strategy is focused on economic, social, and environmental strategies, leveraging our technology and workforce. Every day, we work toward creating a sustainable and inclusive future by driving sustainable practices and positive social impact at scale. We have set goals to hold ourselves accountable for progress across our businesses, operations, and supply chain. Our goals are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) and industry frameworks and best practices.
This ESG framework is a roadmap to help us achieve our goals and commitments. In our first year, we committed to continuously evolving our strategy to ensure it aligns with best practices, the latest climate science, and regulations. Our ESG framework is defined as follows:

  • Environment: Our sustainability program focuses on all environmental aspects and helps our stakeholders. We aim to achieve net zero emissions by 2040 and have set a goal to expand renewable energy across our portfolio, with the aim of achieving 100% renewable energy by 2030.
  • People: This focuses on our talent, including culture, skill development, employee engagement, inclusion, diversity, and equity, as well as corporate social responsibility community-focused programs. We prioritize well-being, health and safety, social impact, human rights, and diversity across the company.
  • Trust: This focuses on our governance program and how we build integrity and value across our employees, investors, governments, customers, and nonprofit organizations. We have built integrity and value into our interactions with Kyndryls, investors, governments, customers, partners, suppliers, and nonprofit organizations.

We recognize that global economic and geopolitical changes will pose challenges and opportunities for our business, customers, and communities. We will continue to promote policies and programs that align with best practices, climate science, and regulations, and positive outcomes for our people, customers, society, and the environment.

Kyndryl's commitment to ensuring a sustainable and inclusive future is at the heart of its purpose to power human progress. Here are a few of our achievements:

  • Kyndryl has built its net zero goal and Green House Gas (GHG) emissions targets on the scientific recommendations of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and have validated our targets through the Science Based Targets initiative.
  • The company has committed to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.
  • Continually improving our certified Environmental and Energy Management System in accordance with the ISO 14001 and 50001 standards.
  • Kyndryl has aligned its sustainability programs and reporting to industry best practices and frameworks, including the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), Sustainable Accounting Standards Board (SASB), CDP Climate Change questionnaire, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

Kyndryl will also leverage industry best practices to govern its environmental and energy management system, processes, and tools to ensure operations meet high standards of sustainability compliance and responsible business practices that clients and partners expect.

Kyndryl is fully committed to the Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDG) as defined by the United Nations and has developed our environmental, social and governance impact strategies aligned with these goals.
