- Relocation presented dual challenge from demanding four-week time frame and critical importance of Mainz University Medical Center as the only supramaximal care provider in Rheinland-Pfalz
- Migration of nearly 500 virtual and 70 physical systems was completed during ongoing operations to ensure availability of vital clinical systems
Kelsterbach, Germany, March 21, 2023 – Kyndryl (NYSE: KD), the world's largest provider of IT infrastructure services, has successfully completed the migration and relocation of Mainz University Medical Center’s data center in record time, while ensuring uninterrupted availability of critical systems and operations.
The project included the live migration of nearly 500 virtual systems and 70 physical systems under the highest security measures due to the movement of sensitive data. However, downtime during the move was minimized through a rolling procedure that was limited to less than six hours for necessary physical relocations. The migration of the NAS storage environments was accomplished by Kyndryl consultants without downtime as the systems were mirrored.
The critical infrastructure of the hospital was successfully relocated to the new location without any outages. Additionally, by replacing old hardware, Mainz is saving energy costs due to power consumption being reduced between 20-25 kVA. As a result, Mainz University Medical Center was pleased with both the speed of the migration and the resulting benefits to its operations.
"The relocation of a data center during ongoing operations was a special challenge for us. As part of the critical infrastructure, we cannot afford to have any system failures," said Dr. Christian Elsner, commercial director at Mainz University Medical Center. "Another challenge was the very tight time frame of only four weeks. Kyndryl supported us optimally in this project, and we were able to migrate all systems and sensitive data on time, without any outages or security issues."
Kyndryl Consult is supporting Mainz University Medical Center throughout its entire IT transformation – from rethinking and modernizing its infrastructure to simplifying complex IT processes and ongoing datacenter migration with speed and reliability. With the IPSUM project (IT infrastructure, process, and service optimization of Mainz University Medical Center), the two partners are demonstrating how to promote digitization quickly, safely, and sustainably in a large healthcare institution.
The IPSUM project consists of several phases and is based on an initial IT health check. From this maturity analysis of the IT, Kyndryl derived specific recommendations for action and created a comprehensive roadmap with targeted measures for the transformation of IT operations. Legal requirements for critical infrastructures (KRITIS) and the needs of employees, patients, researchers, and the IT team were also taken into account.
After the successful completion of the first data center relocation, the next important milestone in the IPSUM program is already scheduled and within reach. On May 12, 2023, new and modern office spaces will be inaugurated, among others, for the IT team of Mainz University Medical Center in Station West in Mainz.
